Durban: Tourists rescued at sea
01 Aug 2012
GERMAN tourists enjoying a boat ride, and hoping to see whales in the sea off Durban yesterday had a lucky escape when the seven metre rigid inflatable charter boat they were on capsized 50 metres offshore.
Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute, said eThekwini Municipality lifeguards rescued the tourists, finding two of them trapped under the overturned boat.
Jayce Govender, eTheweni Municipal Lifeguards manager, said all 11 of those aboard the boat were accounted for and safe and that the man and woman who were freed from under the boat were brought to safety by the lifeguards. It is believed that an air pocket between the pontoons and hull of the boat enabled the two trapped passengers to breathe.
