Progress at the landfill site has been held up by ageing equipment.
Workers at the site said municipal officials had neither maintained the site properly nor provided adequate equipment for the job.
But with purchase of the brand-new compactor the landfill site will have two machines, which should ease the backlog at the site.
Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said: “Even though I had not arrived when the acquisition was made to buy this equipment, it is really a pleasure to be part of this delivery, which marks the beginning of seriously changing the image of our city.”
Nkosi said he had sleepless nights when he had to hire a compactor for 15 days because it cost the council a lot of money.
“When I look at this equipment I know that the municipality now has its own machinery that will last the council years to come.”
Nkosi said it was important to provide training for the employees who would be operating the compactor to ensure its proper use and prevent breakdowns.
He said he was grateful that the suppliers, Bell Equipment, had given the municipality a five-year service plan.
Mayor Ndlela said the council was committed to changing the city’s image for the better, and buying the compactor was in line with that.
“We have received a lot of negative publicity on the state of our landfill site, which on daily basis receives about 600 tons of waste,” he said.
He said the lifespan of the landfill was originally set for 2019, but with the arrival of the new compactor, this would be extended to 2023.• email@example.com
