Some of the people arrested were wanted in connection for other crimes such as murder.
Provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the unit embarked on a province-wide operation to trace sexual offenders, code-named Operation Bopha.
The operation was conducted simultaneously by FCS units in various parts of the province and was co-ordinated from the provincial headquarters.
Zwane said the operation started at 8 pm and was called off at midnight. He said detectives arrested 55 suspects aged between 18 and 53. They will appear in court soon.
“Similar police operations will be conducted simultaneously in the near future in order to bring the wanted suspects behind bars,” he added.
