DA dips into parties'fund after all

DESPITE its objections to the KwaZulu-Natal Party Funding Act in 2008, the Democratic Alliance received and used R3 million from the fund.

Tables at the end of the 2010/11 annual report on the KwaZulu­Natal Represented Political Parties Fund show the DA had spent the bulk of its funds on staff costs, administration costs and on promotion and publications.

The ANC used up the bulk of its funds on meetings, rallies and administration costs.

Former KZN DA leader Roger Burrows objected strongly when the bill was proposed just before the 2009 elections. He felt parties, already funded by national government, did not need more from the pro­vince. He was then concerned about KZN’s cash crisis and claimed the ANC was trying to get more funds into its election coffers.
