FIVE employees have been suspended at O.R. Tambo International Airport in the last week for stealing from passengers’ baggage.

Two of the employees suspended by the Airports Company of SA (Acsa) were arrested by police.

Tebogo Mekgoe, deputy director for airport operations at O.R. Tambo, said Acsa had increased surveillance at the airport, leading to a decline by a third in the amount of theft from baggage over two years. In the year to January 2010, the baggage of 18 departing passengers out of every 1 000 was tampered with. This had declined to 10,4 out of 1 000 a year later, Mekgoe said.
