PACIFIC PALISADES (California) — Steve Stricker won the Northern Trust Open on Sunday by two strokes after shooting a final round 70 to finish with a 16-under par total of 268.
It was Stricker’s eighth tour victory and his fifth since 2007. Briton Luke Donald, who shot a 66, finished second, while Dustin Johnson tied with J.B. Holmes for third, three strokes further back.
Stricker had to return to the course early to finish his third round, which had been suspended due to bad light. He had a five-stroke lead with four holes remaining and extended it to six.
Although his lead looked insurmountable at the start of the final round, Stricker stumbled early on and Donald took advantage.
Donald two-putted from 28 feet for birdie on the par five first hole and then made an 11-footer on the third to cut the lead to four. Stricker missed a five-foot putt to save par on the following hole and Donald reduced the lead to two when he made a six-foot birdie on the fifth.
Stricker rallied with a a run of birdies starting on the eighth hole, when he holed a six-footer. He made a nine-foot birdie on the following hole and then two holes later extended his lead to three after a 12-foot birdie.
Johnson began a run of his own with four birdies in five holes but Striker managed to hold on for victory.
