COMING up next at the Maritzburg Musicians’ Club is Pietermaritzburg’s favourite upcoming band The Ranks. Having emerged victorious in the 5FM demo bag competition in late 2008, the power indie trio has gone from small-town dreamers to one of South Africa’s most exciting up-and-coming bands.
The band that formed in late 2007 comprises Matt Jones (bass) Brett Jones (drums) and Neil du Plessis (guitar and vocals). The three-piece band plans to release its first music video soon and focus on entertaining local audiences before heading over to Europe and becoming an international success.
With a significant following among younger Pietermaritzburg audiences, the MMC has decided to showcase The Ranks during the varsity holidays to accomodate the large contingent of students in town.
Supporting The Ranks will be singer and songwriter Christo Loots. Entrance is R20, and the evening begins at 8.15 pm.
FOLLOWING last year’s knockout success, the Hillside Concert will take place on July 19 at the Botanical Gardens
The line-up this year has renowned South African band Wonderboom as the featured group. Joining them on stage will be Derrick Zuma, Doc Paul, Pan Latino, the Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters and Celtis.
The afternoon promises to be excellent with the music starting at noon and going through until 4.30 pm.
Ticket prices are being finalised and will be announced this week.
