FIVE youngsters were injured when a race between two cars tended in an accident on Old Greytown Road early yesterday morning.

One of cars, in which four women and a man were racing, struck a palm tree in Old Greytown Road at 4.20 am yesterday and flipped on to the other side of the road.

According to police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram, a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against the driver.

The injured were taken to hospital.

Two people died and eight were injured on Saturday night after the taxi they were travelling in plunged down a steep embankment and landed upside down on the N2 near Sibaya Casino.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, five people were trapped in the wreckage and paramedics, firemen and the SA Police Service search and rescue team had to use the jaws of life to free them. H

Botha said the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

In another incident, three people died after the Golf 5 they were travelling in overturned on the corner of Phoenix highway and Industrial Park Drive in Durban.

“All three males were thrown out of the vehicle and were taken to different hospitals, but they died due to the severity of their injuries,” said Botha.
