DURBAN musician John Ellis yesterday released his second music video off his debut solo album Come Out Fighting. The song — Maybe (Just Maybe) — which is directed and produced by Monte Fuller at Fuller Film Productions, was shot on location on Durban’s beach and has the city skyline as its backdrop.
“The song was written almost literally in the waves, in Umhlanga,” Ellis says, on reflection after returning from the United States where he was based with Tree63. “It was a moment of looking around and saying, ‘Actually, life is pretty good after all’.”
The visual elements in the video were born from this, with Ellis wanting to showcase his Durban roots by shooting the video on the beach.
Radio stations have playlisted Maybe, which as an acoustic-driven song, Ellis wanted to showcase as an alternative to many of his rock ’n roll numbers on the album.
