A SHOE factory in Failsworth Road, Allandale, and a supermarket in Camperdown were gutted by fire this weekend.
In Pietermaritzburg, the Smart Shoes premises were extensively damaged on Saturday afternoon.
It is suspected that an electrical fault sparked the blaze.
Police spokeskperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said there was extensive damage to shoes, the cash till and a fridge.
“It has been noted that an electrical fault might have been the cause of the damage.
“No criminal case has been reported, but the matter is under investigation.”
The fire was contained before it could spread to the adjacent factories.
The Witness was unable to reach the owners for comment yesterday.
Late last year four store owners in the same area lost thousands of rands worth of stock in a fire.
The fire was believed to have started in one factory, where the workers had left for the day. It quickly spread to other shops since the factories were packed full of stock, with a lot of synthetic material, which gave off toxic smoke.
In a separate incident, Star Supermarket in Camperdown burnt down in the early hours of yesterday morning.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of arson has been opened.
