IT was a glamorous night for Pietermaritzburg when the Liberty Midlands Mall and the Midlands Cine Centre hosted the premiere for White Lion, a film co-written by local scriptwriter Janet van Eeden.

An almost-red carpet was rolled out and more than 140 people turned up dressed in their finest to celebrate the achievement of four years of work to bring White Lion to the big screen.

The film tells the story of Letsatsi, a white lion who is cast out from his pride. He goes on a journey of danger and self-discovery to find his place in the world.

It was the dream of executive producer Rodney Fuhr, a longtime animal conservationist, to make a film about animals that keeps as close as possible to true animal behaviour. Kevin Richardson, animal behaviourist extraordinaire, used his immense gift of working with animals to realise Fuhr’s dream.

The film, directed by Michael Swan, won three Saftas at the recent awards ceremony.

It is having six showings a day at Cine Centre Midlands Liberty Mall for the next few weeks.
