A paramedic who is allergic to bee stings risked his own health yesterday to save an elderly man who was stung more than 1 000 times in Drummond.
When he arrived at the man’s house to find him collapsed in the driveway, paramedic Dylan Hornby had to make a brave decision and run to his aid despite the swarming African bees, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.
Bees followed Hornby and his crewmate into the ambulance and stung them, and Hornby suffered a severe reaction.
The man (76) was put on a ventilator and taken to hospital, along with his wife, who was also stung, and Hornby.
