Exciting climax to local club clashes

THE two First Division South club rugby matches at Woodburn Stadium last Friday produced close finishes.

In the main game, a First Division South Top Five clash between Maritzburg Collegians and Drakensberg, which also doubled as a Midlands Rugby Sub-union derby, the spoils were shared in a 13-13 draw.

The Collegians pack, led by in-form hooker Charl Bezuidenhout and inspired by lock Jean Vosloo’s cleaning out at the rucks, were once again more than a match for their opponents up front, but the team continue to battle in finishing off the try-scoring opportunities they create.

Consistent Collegians scrumhalf Michael Brinjac was again at the forefront of many an attacking foray.

In the early match between PMB Waratahs and Durban University, the home team exacted revenge for their two-point loss at Varsity to come away with a hard-fought 14-10 victory.

It might have been more had Waratahs not lost early try-scorer and outstanding flank George Bronkhorst in the 25th minute to what appears to be a serious hamstring injury.

Midlands U20B coach Ralph Cawood was reasonably satisfied with his side’s 15-7 victory over Hillcrest A in the U20B Division match at Hillcrest, this after Midlands had trailed by four points at half-time.

Cawood singled out number eight Hala Xulu and scrumhalf Hayden Jordaan as two of the team’s better players on the night.

Unpublished results — First Division South Bottom 5: PMB Waratahs 14 Durban University 10. Reserves: PMB Waratahs 0 Durban University 18. U20B: Hillcrest 7 Midlands 15. U20C: PMB Collegians 81 Empangeni 0.
