Bot Gardens concert: Legendary band Magna Carta in PMB on farewell tour
07 Jul 2008
Witness Reporter

LEGENDARY ’70s folk band Magna Carta will be performing in Pietermaritzburg in the Botanical Gardens on Sunday, July 20.

The concert starts at noon. Also performing are up-and-coming South African band Southern Gypsy Queen and the Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Ilan Lax, Zephyr and the Ryan Calder Band.

The concert will be in a new amphitheatre setting on the hill at the west end of the gardens (beyond the restaurant) and will give locals an opportunity to relax and enjoy a picnic in the winter sun listening to fine music.

This will be Magna Carta’s last tour, as they are to split in May next year.

Fans will have the opportunity to see one of the greatest acoustic acts in the world perform songs from 40 years of notable classics such as Seasons, Lord of the Ages and Putting it Back Together.

Magna Carta have played at London’s Royal Albert Hall five times — where they recorded a live album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970 — and have done 29 tours across the world, including Katmandhu, the rain forest and Iraq.

In total, the band has visited 61 countries in 35 years.

They are one of the longest-running acoustic acts ever and have played alongside the likes of Cat Stevens, Judy Collins, America, Country Joe, Richard Thompson, Arlo Guthrie, Ralph McTell, the Beach Boys, David Bowie and Dire Straits.

The event is hosted by the Maritzburg Musicians’ Club (MMC). MMC has nominated Duct (Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust) as the beneficiary of this event.

Ticket prices for the concert are R60 (adults) and R40 (students and scholars). Limited block
bookings and VIP tickets are available.
